Understanding Canine Joint Health After Age 7

If you have a dog over seven, you have probably noticed it. The slight hesitation at the bottom of the stairs. The longer naps after a walk. The reluctance to jump into the boot.

This is not laziness. It is biology. From around age seven in medium dogs (earlier in giant breeds), the cartilage in your dog's joints begins to thin. Synovial fluid — the natural lubricant of the joint — reduces. Inflammation creeps in.

The good news: there are four ingredients with serious research behind them that can help.

1. Glucosamine

Glucosamine is a building block of cartilage. Multiple peer-reviewed studies have shown that daily glucosamine supplementation supports cartilage maintenance and joint comfort in dogs with osteoarthritis.

What to look for: Glucosamine HCl (not sulfate), at a minimum of 500mg per dose for a medium dog.

2. Chondroitin Sulfate

Chondroitin works best alongside glucosamine — the two are almost always paired in research-backed formulas. It helps maintain the structure of cartilage and is thought to support water retention within the joint.

3. Green-Lipped Mussel

A New Zealand-native shellfish, green-lipped mussel is one of the most-studied natural joint ingredients. It contains a unique blend of omega-3s, glycosaminoglycans and minerals that support joint comfort.

4. Turmeric (Curcumin)

The golden spice has been used for thousands of years and now has the clinical evidence to match. Curcumin (the active compound in turmeric) has been shown to support a healthy inflammatory response — the underlying driver of joint discomfort.

When should you start? Most vets recommend starting joint support proactively at age 7 — before you see the signs. Once cartilage is gone, it does not come back. The goal is to protect what is there.

Our Joint + Mobility Chews combine all four of these ingredients (plus MSM and Hyaluronic Acid) at clinically-relevant doses in a soft chew dogs love.
